I felt like I have been trying to get to the top floor for years, to elevate
myself and he came along and showed me where the elevator button was and just
like that I was there. Like he opened the curtain for me and let in the light
and let me see the truth of my life and enabled me to find the sensibility to
better understand not only my issues but my husband's issues and children's and
my parents' issues, etc. and therefore have more insight as to how to be
helpful.
I have been thinking for days about how exactly I can explain my experiences in
his class. It is very difficult to put mystical and spiritual epiphanies into
words, all I can tell you is that the experiences that you get in this seven
day class you cannot get anywhere else. Not in silent meditation, not in
reading about transcendental experiences, not in therapy. Master Chou takes you by
the hand and helps you achieve the inner peace, understand where the knots in
your emotional life are so you can untangle them and free yourself from
unnecessary pain, suffering and disease. He gets you in touch with your spirit
and teaches you to follow your heart and be true to your inner self.
To understand his dharma, or method, it is necessary to understand the basic
premise of ancient Chinese Medicine that all disease is blocked energy,
accumulated negative emotions that do not let the chi, the life force, flow
freely in your body, causing discomfort and eventually disease.
His new dharma consists of three parts.
The standing meditation, standing like pine it is called, is more than a simple
meditation, it is a tool that teaches you to read your body while you are
quietly standing and looking inwards getting in touch with your core. You
become aware of where you hold negative energy in your body, you realize why
you react certain ways and why you tense up and block the energy in your body
when you feel certain emotions. Then you learn to release those knots and relax
from the center of your being. You learn that happiness starts with relaxing
and letting go of emotions that you do not need to carry around with you
anymore.
He also teaches the practice of bowing and simple spiritual exercises designed
to align the spinal column and keep the vertebrae flexible and aligned so that
you can be an open vessel and the light can flow through you unimpeded.
The most fun element, is the Hochi practice. A stepping to the beat form of
dancing that eventually with practice becomes a twirling, similar to what the
Turkish Sufis do. This technique lets you change the energy in your body,
release your negative energy and accumulated toxins and change the frequency of
your being and align yourself with the universal love light. The universe
turns, the world turns on its axis, your DNA turns, your molecules are in a
constant twirling motion. When you twirl you feel at one with the universe,
like you return to that space of purity and innocent joy you felt as a child on
the merry-go-round.
Finally, he teaches the healing hands technique which allows you to connect
with someone else's energy and give love to another person in the form of a
soothing mixture of a caress and a massage. This is a tool that lets you
channel energy and transmit it and at the same time you are recharging yourself
with energy. The more you give, the more you receive, like everything in life.
It is like going for an energy tune-up.
The practice of all these elements together help you change the negative
patterns in your life and regain your equilibrium, become the light being we
are all supposed to be. You become reacquainted with your true self. The goal
is to attain harmonious chi, or Hochi, and to help you relax the body, empty
the mind and center the spirit.
The biggest bonus for me out of this class has been the changes my husband,
Surj, has experienced. Even though supportive of me all these years in my
pursuit of the light, he has never really been interested in any of it. He just
indulged me and let me do what makes me happy. An attorney by profession, a
litigator at that, he is a man facing hostility constantly, with a steel armor
at all times, very much the warrior mentality. He has been slowly but surely
poisoning himself with the stress of the job and undealt issues he just blocked
and stuffed in a corner somewhere. Through the years, he has developed high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and other complications that come
along with all that.
